U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, an Arvada Democrat, has tested positive for COVID-19, his office said Tuesday.

As of now, I am asymptomatic and I’m feeling good,” Perlmutter said in a written statement. “I am currently in Washington, D.C., and plan to isolate in my apartment while continuing to work and voting remotely.”

The diagnosis, which he said he received Tuesday, serves as a reminder for the importance of taking the highly contagious virus seriously, he said: “I’ve been taking precautions like so many Coloradans over the past eight months. … As we enter the holiday season, I encourage everyone to continue to heed the warnings of no personal gatherings, social distancing, and wearing a mask.”

A number of members of Congress have tested positive for COVID-19 — most recently GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa on Tuesday and two representatives on Monday.

Perlmutter is the first member of Colorado’s delegation to announce a positive test.
